At Sandy Spring Friends School’s Summer Academy, our mission is to develop the trained mind, the skilled hand, and the healthy body within a nurturing community that strives to build individual talents and foster caring, effective citizens of the world.

Established in 1961, Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS) offers traditional and specialized academic programs for boys and girls, ages 3-18.  SSFS sits on a pastoral 140-acre campus in the heart of Montgomery County, midway between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.  We also offer a full suite of summer programs, including our Summer Academy, our Summer at Sandy Spring day camp, and our Young World Leaders Program.

Our Summer Academy incorporates the very same principles that make SSFS a special place for kids and teens to learn and grow. We base each course on an inquiry-based approach to learning with an understanding of teachers as life mentors for the path ahead.Through experience-based learning, and using our campus as an outdoor laboratory to learn more about the world around us, our programs emphasize community as a necessary catalyst for growth.

What is a Friends Education?

Quaker education represents a unique combination of academic excellence and spiritual depth.

Quaker education is inclusive of all faiths, since it is based around a set of values, rather than doctrines. At Sandy Spring Friends School, we have a profound sense of hope in the individual’s ability to create positive change within the world, and we foster the values that create change: simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship.
